Women's volleyball takes down Bulldogs on Homecoming

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Occidental defeated Redlands 3-2 on Saturday at Rush Gymnasium, taking the match 17-25, 25-18, 25-13, 23-25, 15-8. Occidental finished with 17 service aces and 94 digs while holding Redlands to a .109 hitting percentage.

Occidental pulled the opening set even at 3-3, but Redlands' serving helped create separation as the visitors moved ahead 10-4. Occidental answered with kills from Lauren Neely, Jasmine Shum and Audrey Makler during a three-point push to 10-7, and later got service aces from Chloe Jeong and Anna Curtis-Revelle. Redlands kept the margin from closing further and took the set 25-17.

Occidental turned a 5-5 tie into a 13-5 lead with an eight-point run, with Curtis-Revelle serving the final seven points of the stretch and Makler adding two kills. After Redlands closed to 21-18, Occidental won the last four points, including two Curtis-Revelle service aces, to take the set 25-18.

Occidental opened the third set with six straight points, taking the first point on a Jasmine Shum kill before Eyleen Sanchez served five consecutive points that included two aces and two more Shum kills. Occidental later reached set point on a Curtis-Revelle ace, and Makler closed the set with a kill from Jeong for a 25-13 win.

Occidental led 22-18 late in the fourth set, but Redlands answered with six straight points to move ahead 24-22 and went on to take the set 25-23. Earlier, Jeong served Occidental from 14-13 to 18-13 with back-to-back aces followed by kills from Curtis-Revelle and Jasmine Shum.

Occidental took control of the fifth set early, building an 8-1 lead behind kills from Makler and Jasmine Shum, aces by Eyleen Sanchez and Jeong, and a block involving Curtis-Revelle and Shum. After Redlands scored consecutive points to reach 11-7, Occidental answered with kills by Sloane Shoop and Shum and an Elizabeth Hermosillo ace. Shum closed the set with a kill from Kendall Taylor for a 15-8 Occidental finish.
