THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — Occidental (18-7, 11-5 SCIAC) secured a narrow 86-82 victory over Cal Lutheran (13-12, 8-8 SCIAC) on Saturday night at Gilbert Arena. Occidental's strong first half, where it scored 50 points, proved crucial in holding off a late surge from Cal Lutheran.
Occidental opened strong with
Nicky Clotfelter's three-pointer 22 seconds into the period, setting the tone for a productive offensive first half. The team showcased efficient shooting, hitting 20 of 29 field goals, including 10 of 13 from beyond the arc, while maintaining control with a 17–10 rebounding advantage.
Perry Rainey added to the momentum with multiple scoring efforts, contributing to a 50–32 lead over Cal Lutheran at the end of the first half.
Occidental surged in the second half, narrowing the gap with a strong offensive push.
Nasir Luna ignited the effort with a 3-pointer at 16:29, followed by timely scoring from Clotfelter, who contributed crucial baskets late in the half. Despite turnovers, Occidental maintained momentum, benefiting from free throws down the stretch. The half ended with Occidental trailing 86–82, setting up a close finish.
Luna scored 20 points, converting all three of his three-point attempts, and collected seven rebounds. Clotfelter also tallied 20 points, with a perfect 5-for-6 from the free-throw line, and added six rebounds. Rainey led the scoring with 22 points, including four three-pointers, and grabbed five rebounds.
Occidental has a record of 18-7 overall and 11-5 in SCIAC play. Cal Lutheran stands at 13-12 overall and 8-8 in SCIAC competition.
