CLAREMONT, Calif. — Occidental College (1-3, 1-3) fell to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (4-1, 3-0) with a final score of 21-5 at Zinda Field on Wednesday night. Despite the loss, the Tigers managed to net a power-play goal in the fourth quarter.
The game opened with Claremont-M-S establishing early dominance, as Ella Seidel scored the first goal with an assist from Amelia Ulmer at 12:06. The home team continued its offensive run with Grace Minturn converting a man-up free position shot at 11:42 and Julia Ryan adding another free position goal at 10:46. By 8:31, the Athenas had extended its lead to 8-0 after Amelia Ulmer's goal, assisted by Grace Minturn. Occidental found its footing later in the quarter, with
Charlotte Franklin scoring her first goal of the season at 6:24, and
Ava Whelan and
Ellie Mahoney each adding a goal to close the gap. The quarter ended with Claremont-M-S leading 9-3.
In the second quarter, Claremont-M-S extended its lead with two goals, including a strike by Ella Brown at 9:33 and another at 1:11 assisted by Ava Goldson. Occidental's
Khamille Hart-Smith responded with a free position goal at 6:30. Despite several turnovers from both teams, Claremont-M-S maintained control, with Ruby Maki consistently gaining draw controls. Both goalkeepers were active, with Lyla Johnston making multiple saves against the Tigers' attempts. At the end of the quarter, the score stood at 11-4 in favor of Claremont-M-S.
Claremont-M-S extended its lead over the Tigers in the third quarter with a series of successful plays. Grace Minturn opened the scoring with a free position goal at 13:02, her tenth of the season, and later added another goal at 8:36 with Ava Goldson assisting. Maya Mihara scored a man-up goal at 10:06, also assisted by Goldson. Kate Larson contributed to the scoring run with a goal at 5:13, and Minturn concluded the scoring for the quarter with another goal, bringing her season total to 12. Occidental struggled with turnovers, and despite several ground ball pickups and saves by
Charlotte Dreyfus, it was unable to score, trailing 16-4 at the end of the quarter.
Occidental opened the fourth quarter with a man-up goal from
Charlotte Franklin, assisted by
Tirzah Rivera, at 14:32. However, Claremont-M-S responded with a dominant offensive performance, starting with a goal from Maya Mihara at 11:37, assisted by Amelia Ulmer. Mihara struck again at 7:39, followed by goals from Cate Lewison and Amelia Ulmer, who scored the final goal at 37 seconds left in the quarter, bringing her season total to 16. Despite a strong defensive effort from
Grace Morrow, who made several saves, Claremont-M-S extended its lead to secure the win.
