Baseball drops twin bill to Redlands

LOS ANGELES — Occidental College (18-12, 6-8) fell to the University of Redlands (17-15, 11-6) in both games of a doubleheader on Friday.

In game one the final score was 11-6. Occidental's offense was highlighted by a four-run second inning, but Redlands' five-run first inning set the tone for the game.

Redlands jumped to an early lead in the first inning with Ian Umscheid's two-run homer and capitalized on an error to score five runs. The Tigers responded in the second inning with Logan Rooney scoring on a hit by pitch and Thomas Munch delivering a two-run homer, closing the gap to 5-4 after two innings.

Redlands extended its lead in the third inning with RBI singles from Tanner Gerosa and Sean McCance, making the score 7-4. Occidental added a run in the sixth inning when Antonio Longobardi singled home Rooney, reducing the deficit to 7-5.

In the seventh inning, Redlands' Nate Miller launched a three-run homer, widening the lead to 10-5. The Tigers pushed back with Griffen Rogers driving in Munch, ending the inning at 10-6.

Redlands added another run in the eighth, bringing the game's final score to 11-6. Despite multiple baserunners in the ninth, Occidental did not score further. Final score: Redlands 11, Occidental 6.

Aidan Alfers started on the mound for Occidental, pitching 4 1/3 innings with eight hits allowed, six earned runs, and six walks while striking out four in his 106-pitch outing. Antonio Vazquez provided a brief relief appearance, allowing two hits and issuing two walks over one inning. Malcolm Munnich followed, pitching 1 1/3 innings, conceding four hits and three earned runs, including a home run. Michael Myers, Quinn Smith, and Matthew Uytioco combined for the remaining innings, with Myers dealing with control issues, giving up two walks and two hit batters in his one inning, while Smith and Uytioco each pitched effectively in short stints, with Uytioco delivering one scoreless inning on only 10 pitches.

Munch led the offense with three hits, including a home run, and drove in two runs while scoring twice. Rooney contributed significantly with three hits and scored two runs. Longobardi added two hits, scored once, and drove in a run. Tyler Kubo showcased his power by hitting a double and scoring a run.

In game two, Occidental registered 11 hits and 9 RBIs, while Redlands tallied 17 hits, including two home runs, to secure the victory 13-10 in seven innings.

Occidental took an early lead in the first inning. Thomas Munch doubled, followed by a single from Evann Smith and an RBI single by Benjamin Fitzgerald. Antonio Longobardi then delivered a three-RBI double to left center, putting the Tigers ahead 4-2 at the end of the first inning.

Redlands responded with a run in the top of the second, but the Tigers maintained their lead at 4-3 through two innings.

In the third inning, the Tigers extended their lead. Logan Rooney singled, Tyler Kubo walked, and a throwing error allowed Rooney to score. Anthony Sereno added a two-RBI single, bringing the score to 7-5 in favor of Occidental after three innings.

Both teams scored in the fourth. The Tigers saw Fitzgerald and Rooney reach base via a hit by pitch, setting up Sereno's two-RBI single, keeping Occidental in the lead at 9-7.

Occidental added another run in the fifth inning after Smith walked and later scored on a bases-loaded walk by Mateo Morales. This brought the score to 10-9 after five innings.

Redlands tied the game in the sixth inning with a solo home run by Jesse Bullard, making it 10-10.

In the seventh inning, Redlands pulled ahead with three runs, including another home run by Bullard. Occidental was unable to respond, leaving the score at 13-10.

The game concluded with Redlands securing a 13-10 victory over the Tigers.

Lincoln Lyons started the game for the Tigers, pitching 5 1/3 innings with three walks and one strikeout, allowing 14 hits and eight earned runs. Nathan Goodman followed, pitching 1/3 of an inning with one walk and hitting one batter. Malcolm Munnich took the loss after pitching 2/3 of an inning, giving up one hit, one walk, and two earned runs. Quinn Smith faced two batters, giving up a home run and a walk, while William Myers closed the game, throwing 2/3 of an inning.

Smith led the team with three hits and scored two runs, showcasing his ability to get on base effectively. Longobardi contributed significantly with three RBIs, including a double, to drive the scoring effort. Sereno also played a key role, collecting four RBIs to bolster the offensive output. Rooney added to the tally by crossing the plate three times, demonstrating his knack for scoring opportunities.

Occidental now has a record of 18-12 and 6-8 in the conference. Redlands has a record of 17-15 and 11-6 in the conference. The opener of this series was suspended due to darkness on Thursday and will be finished Saturday, April 11th at 3:30pm in Redlands.
