WHITTIER, Calif. — Occidental (19-16, 7-12) fell to Whittier (16-19, 9-13) with a final score of 8-6 on Friday at Mendez Stadium.
Occidental managed nine hits and six runs, while Whittier secured the win with 11 hits and eight runs.
Occidental started strong in the first inning with
Thomas Munch singling up the middle and advancing on a wild pitch, setting the stage for
Tyler Kubo's walk that brought Munch home.
Jackson Short followed with a single through the left side to score
Benjamin Fitzgerald, putting Occidental ahead 2-0.
In the third inning,
Griffen Rogers and
Logan Rooney both walked, setting up
Antonio Longobardi's single to right center that drove in two runs, extending Occidental's lead to 4-0. Whittier responded in the bottom half with two runs of their own, making it 4-2 after three innings.
During the sixth inning, Munch singled and stole second, followed by
Evann Smith's RBI double down the left field line, adding another run for Occidental. However, Whittier struck back in their half of the inning with four runs, taking the lead 7-5.
Occidental narrowed the gap in the seventh when Rogers walked and later scored on Kubo's single. Whittier added another run in their half, maintaining an 8-6 lead through seven innings.
The game concluded without further scoring, and Whittier secured the win over Occidental with a final score of 8-6.
Griffen Rogers pitched 1 inning, allowing no hits and striking out one batter with 14 pitches, 9 of which were strikes, but hit one batter.
Lincoln Lyons pitched 7 innings, surrendering 11 hits and 6 earned runs while striking out four batters. Lyons threw 119 pitches and issued three walks, concluding his performance with a 3-3 record.
Thomas Munch recorded three hits and scored two runs, adding a stolen base to his performance.
Tyler Kubo drove in two runs with one hit, contributing to the team's offensive efforts.
Antonio Longobardi also brought in two runs, further boosting the lineup.
Evann Smith added to the tally with two hits, including a double, and drove in one run.
