Baseball falls to Chapman in series opener

LOS ANGELES — Occidental College (17-9, 5-5) fell to Chapman University (13-12, 7-6) in a tightly contested 10–8 game on Friday at Anderson Field. The teams traded leads, with Occidental scoring four runs in the fifth inning, but Chapman's six home runs proved decisive.

Occidental jumped to an early lead in the first inning. Thomas Munch singled and stole second, setting the stage for an RBI double by Logan Rooney. Jackson Short followed with a two-RBI single, bringing the score to 3–0 for Occidental.

In the fourth inning, Griffen Rogers doubled and advanced to third on a steal, scoring on Antonio Longobardi's sacrifice fly, increasing Occidental's lead to 4–1 through four innings.

The fifth inning marked a flurry of action. Chapman scored five runs, including a grand slam by Nate Jensen. Occidental responded with four runs of its own. Tyler Kubo, Rooney, and Rogers reached base consecutively, and a wild pitch scored Rooney. Munch added a two-RBI single, closing the inning with Occidental leading 8–6.

Chapman narrowed the gap in the sixth with a solo home run by Joey Capobianco, bringing the score to 8–7. Chapman surged ahead in the eighth with two solo home runs, taking a 9–8 lead.

Chapman added an insurance run in the ninth with a Brady Altman RBI single, sealing a 10–8 victory over the Tigers.

Lincoln Lyons pitched 7 innings, allowing 8 hits and 7 earned runs while issuing one walk and striking out three. Malcolm Munnich appeared in relief for 2/3 inning, conceding 3 hits and 2 earned runs, including two home runs. Antonio Vazquez made a brief appearance, striking out one batter in 1/3 of an inning without allowing any hits or runs. 

Munch recorded three hits, including a double, and drove in two runs. Rooney added a double while scoring two runs and collecting an RBI. Short contributed with two RBIs on one hit. Longobardi drew a walk and managed two RBIs despite not registering a hit.

The Tigers will travel to Orange, CA tomorrow for a doubleheader to close out the three-game series with the Panthers. First pitches scheduled for 11AM and 2:30PM.
