CLAREMONT, Calif. — Occidental lost to Whitman 3-2 on Saturday, with set scores of 20-25, 14-25, 25-23, 25-13, 7-15. Occidental forced a fifth set by winning the third and fourth, hitting .370 in the fourth while holding Whitman to -.056.
Occidental opened the first set with a 4-0 start, getting kills from
Sloane Shoop and
Jasmine Shum after a Whitman service error. Whitman then moved from a 5-4 deficit to an 8-5 lead during Sophie Broesamle's service turn, and Occidental spent the rest of the set trying to answer.
Jasmine Shum added back-to-back late kills to pull Occidental to 24-20, but Whitman closed the set 25-20.
Occidental pulled even at 5-5 on
Chloe Jeong's service ace after early kills from
Sloane Shoop and
Jasmine Shum, but Whitman moved ahead 10-5 soon after.
Anna Curtis-Revelle and
Corinne Van Haeren added kills as Occidental got back to 13-9, before Whitman scored the next six points. Whitman finished the second set 25-14.
Occidental finished the third set by winning the final two points from a 23-23 score, as Van Haeren's kill from
Kendall Taylor made it 24-23 and a Whitman attack error ended the set, 25-23. Earlier, Occidental had to respond after Whitman moved from down 14-12 to ahead 16-14, and on Jeong's serve the home side answered with kills by Curtis-Revelle and Van Haeren plus a Whitman attack error to move back in front, 18-16.
Occidental broke open the fourth set late, winning seven of the final eight rallies after leading 18-12. Van Haeren served five straight Occidental points to push the score to 24-12, with
Lauren Neely and Curtis-Revelle combining on three blocks in that stretch. After Whitman stopped the run, Curtis-Revelle finished the set with a kill for a 25-13 Occidental win.
Occidental started the fifth set with a
Sloane Shoop kill from Taylor, a Curtis-Revelle/Shoop block and a Van Haeren kill to go ahead 3-0. Whitman answered with eight straight points to move in front 8-3, and Occidental later added kills from Curtis-Revelle, Jeong and
Jasmine Shum before Whitman finished the set 15-7.
