The Occidental men's water polo team competed in five games over a three day stretch from September 25th-September 27th at the Air Force Invite in Colorado Springs, CO, picking up wins over Austin College and Augustana.
vs. Cerritos 9/25 (L 16-14)
Cerritos College scored the first four goals of the game before Daron Alexanians put Occidental on the board at 2:49 off a Lucas Washburn assist. Jake Eulenhoefer added a power-play goal at 1:27, but Cerritos College scored twice around Occidental's first-quarter responses and then opened the second quarter with three straight goals. Nicholas Karamian answered for Occidental with goals at 4:49 and 4:05 in the second quarter, and Lars Schubert added another at :16 after a three-goal Cerritos College stretch. Occidental generated more offense in the third quarter, with Danny Miller scoring at 6:38, Joey Gutierrez at 5:59 and :29, Alexanians at 4:08 and Washburn at 2:40 as the teams continued to trade goals. After Cerritos College scored at 7:14 in the fourth quarter, Occidental closed the scoring with four straight goals from Karamian at 6:52, Schubert at 6:17 and Karamian again at 4:45 and 3:15. Occidental finished with 14 goals, including four on power plays and two on penalty shots, while Cerritos College totaled 16 goals with five power-play scores and two penalty-shot goals taking the game by a score of 16-14.
vs. Austin College 9/26 (W 12-11)
Occidental defeated Austin College 12-11 on Saturday. Occidental scored five goals in the second quarter and finished with five power-play goals and two penalty-shot goals.
After Austin College opened the scoring, Occidental answered in the first quarter with consecutive goals from Lucas Washburn and Nicholas Karamian, the second on a penalty shot, before Austin College scored again. Occidental created the first extended scoring stretch in the second quarter, getting three straight goals, the first from Danny Miller and two from Karamian. Austin College responded during the middle of the game, including three straight goals in the third quarter and another to open the fourth. Occidental then put together three consecutive fourth-quarter goals from Karamian, Washburn, and Joey Gutierrez. Austin College scored the final three goals, but Occidental held off the late push finished the 12-11 win over Austin College.
Karamian scored five goals on six shots to lead Occidental's attack. Lucas Washburn finished with two goals on two shots, while Danny Miller added two goals on three shots. Will Garcia recorded 10 saves in goal.
vs. Biola 9/26 (L 20-15)
Biola opened the game with goals from Ryder Imbriani and Gavin Starling before Occidental answered through a goal from Jake Eulenhoefer. Joey Gutierrez added another Occidental goal, but Biola scored the final two goals of the first quarter and the first three of the second quarter. Daron Alexanians stopped that stretch at 6:14 of the second quarter, and Occidental later put together three consecutive goals from Lars Schubert at 3:18, Nicholas Karamian at 1:26 on a power play and one more from Ethan Kim at :23 off a Lucas Washburn assist before Biola scored twice. Karamian scored again at 6:58 of the third quarter, but Biola answered with two goals, and the teams then alternated goals from 3:15 through :16, with Max Sauers, Zane Derrod and Miles McDaniel scoring for Occidental during that exchange. In the fourth quarter, Loron Washburn converted a power play at 7:24, Biola then scored twice, and Occidental closed with goals from Sauers at 4:12, Schubert at 2:55 and Karamian at :53. Occidental totaled 15 goals on 30 shots with three power-play goals, while Biola finished with 20 goals on 26 shots, including five power-play goals and two penalty-shot goals.
vs. Augustana (Ill.) (W 12-11)
Occidental defeated Augustana 12-11 on Sunday at Cadet Natatorium. Occidental finished with a 30-22 shot advantage and added two power-play goals plus one penalty-shot goal.
Occidental opened with goals from Danny Miller and Nicholas Karamian, who scored on a penalty shot at 5:04 in the first quarter before Augustana got on the board on a goal from Luke Burger. Karamian answered off an assist from Zane Derrod, Jake Eulenhoefer scored just before the end of the first, and Occidental carried the run into the second quarter with goals from Lars Schubert and Derrod. Augustana responded with three straight scores in the second, including two by Malte Faltstrom, before Schubert scored again thanks to an assist from Derrod. The teams traded scoring stretches in the third, with Schubert scoring at 3:19 and Derrod converting a power play at 1:42 around three Augustana goals. In the fourth, Atticus Wahab-Holles scored at 7:02, Joey Gutierrez followed at 6:17, and Wahab-Holles added a power-play goal at 4:09 as Augustana continued to answer, including two late goals. Occidental finished with 12 goals on 30 shots, while Augustana scored 11 on 22 shots and converted seven power-play chances.
Schubert scored a team-high three goals and added an assist on five shots. Zane Derrod finished with two goals, two assists and a steal on four shots. Wahab-Holles scored twice, added an assist and won a sprint. Karamian added two goals on five shots.
vs. UCSB (L 35-8)
UC Santa Barbara scored the first six goals before Occidental got on the board on Miles McDaniel's goal at 3:39 in the first quarter. Lars Schubert added a penalty-shot goal at :40, but UC Santa Barbara continued to string together scoring stretches into the second quarter before Andre Milasincic scored at 4:59 and again on a penalty shot at :31. Occidental opened the third-quarter scoring through Jake Eulenhoefer at 7:37, and Max Sauers followed at 4:39 off an assist from McDaniel before Zane Derrod scored at 1:00. UC Santa Barbara scored the first six goals of the fourth quarter before Daron Alexanians converted a power play at 2:05, then closed with the final three goals. Occidental finished with eight goals on 23 shots, including one power-play goal and two penalty-shot goals, while UC Santa Barbara totaled 35 goals on 44 shots with nine power-play goals.
