PASADENA, Calif. — Occidental defeated Caltech 5-0 on Wednesday. Occidental did most of its scoring before halftime, putting four goals on the board in the first half before adding one in the second. It finished with a 17-4 advantage in shots and a 12-3 edge in shots on goal, with Occidental's goalkeeper making three saves in the shutout.
Occidental turned early pressure into a 4-0 halftime lead, breaking through after forcing five saves from Caltech goalkeeper Kassie Kristufek between 4:30 and 13:50.
Alessia Sacchi opened the scoring at 17:04 off an assist from
Mia Merkelbach, and
Diana Reyes-Sanchez followed at 17:07 with a goal assisted by
Bella Calemine.
Mia Steadman converted a penalty kick at 20:56, and
Natalia Perez added another goal at 31:15.Â
Occidental added the only goal of the second half at 85:04, when
Tess Adlam scored to extend the advantage to 5-0. Earlier, Occidental absorbed Caltech pressure after the break, with
Maya Crawford saving Maryan Malkosh's shot in the 51st minute before Caltech added another corner and sent a shot high. Crawford made another save on Aurelia Kuester in the 66th minute, and Occidental answered with its own chances, including a
Maile Fukushima shot saved by Kassie Kristufek and two
Sophia Weigt attempts during a three-shot stretch. Occidental kept pressing with a corner in the 81st minute and an
Emerson Shirey shot wide right before Adlam's late finish, closing out the 5-0 result.
