CLAREMONT, Calif. — Occidental lost to North Central 3-2 (25-23, 14-25, 25-23, 20-25, 13-15) on Friday at Roberts Pavilion. Occidental totaled 50 kills and hit .103, while North Central finished with 62 kills and a .200 hitting percentage.
Occidental erased an 11-10 deficit in the first set by scoring five of the next six points, with
Sloane Shoop and
Jasmine Shum supplying kills during the push to a 15-12 lead. Shum added key late swings, including kills that moved Occidental to 23-20 and 24-21. North Central pulled within 24-23, but Occidental closed the set on a North Central attack error for a 25-23 win.
The Tigers made their main mid-set push after falling behind 11-4, getting a
Kendall Taylor kill before
Chloe Jeong served through a North Central attack error and an ace to make it 11-7. North Central kept the separation from there and later moved from 18-12 to 23-12 despite a Taylor service ace just before that stretch. The set finished 25-14 for North Central.
After trailing by three late in the thid, Oxy erased the deficit with six straight points to move ahead 20-17.
Jasmine Shum served the final five points of that run and
Corinne Van Haeren added a kill. North Central later closed within 24-23, but Shum finished the set with a kill from Jeong to give Occidental a 25-23 win.
The Tigers kept it close through the majority of the fourth, but a four-point Cardinal run gave North Central a 21-17 advantage. Occidental got late points on a service error and an
Elizabeth Hermosillo ace.
Occidental answered a 9-5 fifth-set deficit with three straight points, including a Hermosillo ace, and later tied the set at 11-11 behind a Curtis-Revelle kill, her service ace and a
Jasmine Shum-Makler block. North Central moved back in front 14-11 before Occidental stayed in it on a North Central error and a Shum kill from Taylor. The rally stopped there, as North Central took the set 15-13.
