LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Oct. 16, 2007) - Orange jerseys filled the
court, but tonight the winning team at Rush Gymnasium was
Pomona-Pitzer who defeated the Tigers in three games by scores of
30-16, 30-18 and 30-22.
The teams combined for a number of
entertaining rallies, but the Sagehens controlled each game, never
trailing by more than a few. In the final game the Tigers made a
run, pulling the score to 23-20, but that was as close as they
would come. Pomona-Pitzer strung together five points and three
plays later they sealed the game.
In the final game the Tigers hit .158 overall,
an improvement from the opening game in which they hit just .032.
Sonia Huizar recorded her
first double-double of the season as she led all players with both
a season high13 kills and 15 digs. She added two
block assists as well. Freshman Kathryn Bockmon
tallied seven kills and eight digs in the match. Jaime
Nikami and Ginger Grimes recorded 14 and
13 assists respectively.
For the Sagehens Erin Saliba led all players
with 39 assists. Pomona-Pitzer's Elizabeth Denison recorded
13 kills and Megan Prior was next in line with nine while adding
two block assists. As a team Pomona-Pitzer hit .336 in the match
with Prior hitting .529 and Liz Denison finishing the night .522.
Ruchi Patel also dug the ball 15 times.
Occidental lost its second in as many matches
as they returned to SCIAC play. The Tigers fall to 5-10, 2-7 SCIAC
while the Sagehens improve to 10-7, 5-4 SCIAC.
Oxy will play a double header at home on
Saturday, hosting Central College (IL) at 2:00 p.m. before hosting
the Caltech Beavers in SCIAC play at 6:00 p.m.
