Occidental traded blows with Cal Lutheran before falling 10-6 in
game two of a SCIAC doubleheader Saturday March 24 at Bell
Field. Cal Lutheran improved to 11-4, 7-3 SCIAC.
Occidental slipped to 2-24, 2-12 SCIAC.
The Tigers held a brief 6-5 lead after scoring three runs in the
third and fourth innings. Ashley Pond '09 doubled to lead off
the third and scored on a base hit from Teresa Brabant '10.
Alyssa Escalante '10 stroked a double to left center and scored on
a base hit by Alyssa Smith '10.
Cal Lutheran answered with a three-run rally in the top of the
fifth, capped by a two-out triple from catcher Emily
Robertson. Kathryn Mataya shut out the Tigers over the final
three innings to earn the save. The Regals took advantage of
a error at shortstop to score two runs in the seventh inning.
Smith went 3 for 4 with two runs batted in while Brabant and
Escalante recorded two hits apiece. Occidental collected
eleven hits in the game, its second-highest total of the
season.
SCIAC Athlete of the Week Prudence Kjontvedt hit a two-run homer in
the sixth inning to lift Cal Lutheran in game one. The
Tigers left the bases loaded in the first two innings and stranded
13 runners in the game.
