LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Jan. 16, 2008)
– A 51-point second half powered
Occidental to a 92-49 victory over Caltech tonight in Southern
California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action at Rush
Gymnasium.
Oxy shot 62.2% from the field in the second
half to finish 55.4%from the field overall. Ten different Tigers
scored in the game tonight.
Huston Conti led all players
with 18 points, while Joe Sasich, Sean
Anderson and Chris Hunt scored 16, 14 and
12, respectively for Oxy. Eight points came in the first half for
Conti, Sasich and Anderson.
Things were tight in the first half as the
Beavers' Bryan Hires sank a pair of free-throws to tie the
game at 31-31 with 5:27 to play in the first half. The Tigers then
used a 10-2 run to take a 41-35 advantage into the locker room.
An offensive explosion in the second half saw
Conti scoring 10, while Sasich and Henry Meier
each pitched in eight.
Occidental out-rebounded Caltech by a 33-26
margin. Anderson grabbed seven rebounds, with six coming on the
offensive end of the court. Sasich pulled down six boards (four
offensive). Each of them also added four assists, with Anderson
getting two steals and a block as Sasich had four steals.
Thirty-eight of the Tigers' 92 points
came in the paint, thanks in small part to 18 offensive rebounds
that were converted into 24 total points.
Connor Whitman and
Gemayal McBride tallied five assists apiece with
no turnovers. McBride added five steals while Whitman finished with
four steals and a pair of blocks.
The Beavers were solid at the stripe, going
9-for-10. Caltech's Bryan Hires scored 14 (5-for-5 from the
line) with four assists and Travis Haussler tallied 13 (3-for-5
from three point range) with six rebounds. Haussler and Ryan
Elmquist recorded two blocks apiece. As a team they shot 50%
(11-for-22) from the field in the first half.
The Tigers improve to 11-2 overall, 1-1 in
SCIAC as the Beavers fall to 1-12, 0-2.
Oxy will host the University of Redlands on
Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in Rush Gymnasium following the women's
basketball game against UR at 5:00 p.m.
