LOS
ANGELES, Calif. (Oct. 3, 2008) – After a tough start to
conference play, the Occidental College women's volleyball
team snapped a five match losing streak with a 3-0 victory over the
Caltech Beavers, marking the first win in the newly renovated Rush
Gymnasium.
As
a team the Tigers hit .317 with 6.0 total team blocks and 50 digs
en route to a sweep with game scores of 25-13, 25-10, 25-16. In
game two, Oxy took control from the get-go combining for 13 kills
and just one error as they hit .429 as a team.
The
freshmen duo of Gwynne Davis and Allie Brown
combined for 23 of the
Tigers'34 kills in the match, each recording double figures
for the first time at the collegiate level. Davis led all players
with 13 kills, hitting .545, while adding eight digs and three
block assists while Brown hit an astounding .600 with only one
error, also adding three block assists.
In
game one Ashley Rosenbaum served 12 consecutive times as the Tigers
went on an 11-0 run. She had a match-high three service aces for
Oxy. In the final game of the match Kathryn Bockmon
then had a chance to
serve 11 times in a row. She finished with one service
ace.
Defensively Kaitlin
McAndrews and Lisa Fukuzato
each recorded a solo
block for Occidental. Ginger Grimes turned in a 12 dig performance while
Bockmon and Lysa Sim each tallied seven digs.
Jamie Nikami was responsible for 31 of the 32
assists in the game as Davis recorded the final
one.
For
Caltech, Lisa Yee led the way with nine kills and 15 digs while
Vivian Yang provided all 18 assists for the
Beavers.
All 15 Tigers got out on the court before 350
fans who came out to Rush Gymnasium to witness the first conference
win of the season for Oxy before the “Rush Rally” to
formally re-open the gymnasium to the student population, staff and
administrators.
Occidental improves to 2-5, 1-4 in SCIAC while
the Beavers fall to 0-11, 0-6.
Tomorrow evening Oxy will travel to Whittier
to face off with the Poets beginning at 6:00 p.m. at the Graham
Athletic Center.
