CLAREMONT, Calif. (Oct. 4, 2004) – The
Tigers returned to the pool Saturday for the final day of the
Claremont Convergence Tournament and did not disappoint as they
upset Division I George Washington 11-8 before putting away
Washington & Jefferson 16-1 in the final game of the weekend.
Sophomore Austen Oliver paced
the Tigers with a pair of goals, a pair of assists and a pair of
drawn ejections. Also adding two goals apiece were seniors
Andrew Valdes and Jake Santelli.
Both Santelli and Greg Benz drew two ejections as
well.
Blair Bergsteinsson got the
start in front of the cage, making seven blocks to preserve the led
and help Oxy tie up the win.
As a team the Tigers were successful on four
of nine 6-on-5 conversions while they successfully prevented six of
twelve GW 6-on-5 opportunities.
The Tigers followed up their game one win by
demolishing Washington & Jefferson 16-1 to round out the
weekend at 3-1.
Again the duo of Valdes and Santelli led the
way for the Tigers with four goals apiece while
Cameron Brahmst and Adam
Kantor supplied two goals. Although not scoring any goals
in the contest, Oliver dished out five assists, also drawing two
ejections. Santelli and John Wensman had two
steals apiece. Kelly made eight saves in goal
for the Tigers.
Overall this weekend Occidental's
leading scorer was Valdes, with 12 followed by Santelli with eight.
Oliver supplied a team-high eight assists on the weekend.
Oliver drew eight ejections while not being
kicked out at all. Valdes drew five and Brahmst finished with four
drawn ejections.
Valdes and Brahmst each tallied seven steals
on defense while Santelli and Wensman finished with six apiece.
Brahmst also added two field blocks for the Tigers.
Oxy improves to 6-9 and will travel to Orange,
Calif. for the Whittier/Chapman Show Down Tournament, which will
serve as their final pre-conference tune-up. All games will be
played at Chapman. On day one the Tigers will meet co-host Chapman
at 9:20 a.m. followed by a 1:20 p.m. game against Concordia –
Irvine. The weekend will conclude with a morning game, again at
9:20 a.m. against Mt. San Antonio College with the final game to be
determined by their showing in the opening three games.
