Tigers Topped by Athenas

CLAREMONT, Calif.(Oct. 7, 2008) –  After taking the first game 25-21 from Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, Occidental College lost their momentum, dropping the next three games to lose 3-1 on the road in SCIAC play.

In the first game the Tigers totaled 12 kills.  Oxy's freshman Gwynne Davis again led all Oxy players with 13 kills and was second only to Angela Estrella Lemus who finished with 17 kills for CMS. Fellow Tiger classmate Kaitlin McAndrews was next in line with eight kills.

After a strong first game from Oxy coupled with a slow start from the Athenas, CMS went on to defeat the Tigers by scores of 25-16, 25-7 and 25-16.

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps hit a phenomenal .545 in game two, tallying 20 kills with just three errors, to take control for the remainder of the match.

Jamie Nikami supplied 17 assists for Oxy while Ginger Grimes and Kathryn Bockmon each broke double figures with 10 and 11 digs, respectively. Bockmon also recorded three service aces, adding six assists and two kills.

The Tigers fall to 3-6, 2-5 in SCIAC play and currently sit in sixth place.

Occidental returns to Rush Gymnasium on Friday night to host a non-conference match with West Coast Baptist College at 7:30 p.m.
