THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The Occidental College softball
team completed its 2008 season on the road against Southern
California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference foe California
Lutheran University with a pair of games in which the Tigers fell
by scores of 4-2 and 6-2.
In game one the Tigers collected two runs on three hits. The
Regals jumped out to an early 1-0 in the first innings, adding a
run in the fourth and a pair of runs on a double to take a 4-0 lead
in the fifth.
Oxy cut the deficit to 4-2 when designated player Teresa
Barabant connected for a two-run home run down the left
field line in the sixth inning. Freshman shortstop Gabriela
Chavez was hit by a pitch and scored on the long ball.
Unfortunately, that was all the scoring the Tigers could muster in
game one.
The second and final game of the season looked promising for the
Tigers as they jumped out to a 2-0 lead. Lindsay
Gross scored both Oxy runs after singling and doubling in
the second and fourth, respectively. Tanya Milki
pushed Gross across the plate with a single in the fourth. Gross
was 2-2 adding a sacrifice bunt.
CLU responded with three runs in the bottom of the fourth on two
hits, a walk and a Tiger error. The Regals added to their lead in
the sixth with three runs, two coming on a homerun by catcher Emily
Robertson.
Chavez capped off her freshman campaign with a 2-5 day at the
plate with a walk and a stolen base. In the field she had six
putouts and four assists. Barabant was 3-5 on the day with a walk.
Freshman centerfielder Olympia Powell recorded
four putouts and an assist in the field, drawing a walk in game
two. Gross had a putout and four assists in
Senior Kelli Moriguchi started both games for
the Tigers. She tossed 9.1 total innings, striking out four.
Occidental ends the season with a 3-33 record and an 0-24 SCIAC
mark.
