LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Jan. 7, 2009) – The final tune-up
game for the Occidental College Tigers was not a victorious one as
the men's basketball team fell by a 61-46 margin to the
Chapman University Panthers on the road tonight.
While the teams remained within each other's reach
throughout the first half, Chapman held a 31-25 advantage at the
break before building a double figure lead early in the second
half. Oxy chipped away and pulled within four at 42-38 with 12:41
remaining, but the Panthers were on the prowl and quickly responded
with a 13-3 run to open a double-figure that was too much for the
Tigers to overcome.
The Panthers shot an outstanding 50% from the field and were 41.7%
from the three-point line while Occidental combined to shoot 36.0%
from the field and just 28.6% from beyond the arc.
Junior forward Sean Anderson led all Tigers with
13 points while senior guard Justin Goltz was
right behind with 12. Chapman's Griffin Ramme led all players
with 20 points with teammate Kyle Wood finishing with 15.
Jack Hanley chipped in with nine points, adding
three assists and a pair of steals for Oxy.
Chapman held the rebounding edge as well (33-25) despite Oxy
grabbing 10 offensive boards to the Panthers' nine. Anderson
posted a game-high eight rebounds and three of Goltz's four
boards came on the offensive end of the court.
Oxy forced 21 turnovers, but committed 17 of their own, which hurt
as it led to 20 Chapman points.
The Tigers fall to 4-7 overall entering Southern California
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Saturday, Jan. 10
when they host 2007-08 Co-SCIAC Champion Cal Lutheran at 7:30 p.m.
in Rush Gymnasium following the women's basketball SCIAC home
opener against Cal Lutheran at 5:00 p.m.
