WHITTIER, Calif. (Oct. 2, 2009) – Returning to Southern
California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play tonight on the
road the Whittier College Poets defeated the Occidental College
Tigers three sets to one. Oxy battled the whole night, losing close
games 25-23, 26-24 and 26-24.
Logan Boyer-Hayse finished with 15 kills in
just 18 attempts to hit at a phenomenal .667 clip. She had five
kills in each of the first two games (in just six chances both
times) and was the only played to reach double figures in kills for
Oxy. Freshman Kasey Rose chipped in with seven
kills while junior setter Ginger Grimes supplied
25 assists.
Defensively Boyer-Hayse and Ashley Rosenbaum
each had four block assists as the Tigers combined for 7.0 blocks.
Freshman Anna Kurnizki had a tema-high 17 digs while Boyer-Hayse
and Grimes finished with 13 apiece.
Whittier looked to Aya Nakano who recorded a match-high 18 kills
and 20 digs.
Occidental falls to 8-10 overall, 2-3 in SCIAC play while WC
improves to 4-5, 2-3.
Tomorrow night the Tigers will return to Rush Gymnasium where
they will host the Cal Lutheran Regals (8-7, 3-2) at 6:00 p.m.
Tonight CLU lost a heart-breaker to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 3-2,
and have dropped back-to-back five-game matches.
