CLAREMONT, Calif. (Feb. 13, 2010) - The Tigers
disappointed on the road, as they dropped a set of Southern
California Intercollegiate Athletics Conference games to
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. It wasn't the conference play debut
Oxy was hoping for; falling to the Athenas 10-2 (in five innings)
in the first game and 3-2 in the second game.
CMS was hot, right off the bat, scoring two
runs in the first inning. Their momentum only continued to build;
scoring three runs in the third and one in the fourth, putting them
up 6-0. The Tigers, scoreless so far, sparked hope in the fifth,
putting up a quick two points, but that's all they would do.
The Athenas went on to score four more runs in the bottom of the
fifth, giving them 10 points and allowing for the mercy rule.
Center fielder, Olympia
Powell and second baseman, Lindsay Gross
each scored a run for the Black and Orange; while catcher,
Alyssa Escalante and first baseman, Alyssa
Smith, picked up an RBI a piece.
Shanna Yackel, pitched four
innings for the Tigers and was credited with the loss. Rebecca
Gularte came away with the win, pitching all five inning for CMS.
In the second game of the doubleheader, Oxy
held off the Athenas, only allowing five hits and three runs; but
were unable to put enough points on the board to get the win. The
Athenas were up 3-0 in the top of the sixth, when the Tigers
rallied, scoring two runs, but that's all they would do.
Brittany Vacura pitched six
innings for the Tigers and was credited with the loss, while Emma
Friedenberg picked up the win for the Athenas.
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps came away their first
set of conference wins, keeping them undefeated with an overall
record of 5-0. The Tigers drop 0-2 in SCIAC play and are 1-3
overall.
Oxy will return to the field Sunday, Feb. 14,
when they host a doubleheader against La Sierra University starting
at noon.
