REDLANDS — Madyson
Cassidy (Arcadia) had 23 digs, Aly
Fritz (South Pasadena) had six block assists and the Occidental
College women's volleyball team swept Redlands on the road Tuesday
night, 25-13, 26-24, 25-13.
Oxy had near wire-to-wire victories in Games 1 and 3, only
trailing to Redlands until 2-1 in the first set, but Game 2 was
competitive toward the end. With the score tied at 24, Alyssa Mort
(Tucson, Ariz.) and Kasey Rose
(Los Olivos) scored back-to-back points to give Oxy the two-set
lead.
Logan
Boyer-Hayse (Boulder, Colo.), who was named the SCIAC Female Student-Athlete of the Week on
Tuesday night, led Oxy with 14 kills despite playing with a broken
left hand. Rose chipped in 13 and Mort added six.
Oxy setter Jessie
Altman (La Jolla) led the match with 34 assists.
Jacqueline
Surdell (Chicago) had an ace, four digs and did an "outstanding
job passing, digging and serving," according to Occidental coach
Heather Collins.
Redlands' Ashton Martin led the Bulldogs (5-9, 1-7 SCIAC) with
eight kills.
With one round of SCIAC play in the books, Oxy (12-4, 5-3 SCIAC)
sits two games back of La Verne (14-2, 7-1 SCIAC) for first place.
Chapman (12-3, 6-1 SCIAC) and Cal Lutheran (14-4, 6-1 SCIAC) have
played one less conference match and are tied for second.
The Tigers open the second round of SCIAC against Caltech on
Friday and then cap the weekend at La Verne in a match that could
put them right back into the SCIAC championship hunt.
