Oxy bats quiet in losses to Pomona-Pitzer

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

LOS ANGELES – The Occidental College softball team continued SCIAC play on Saturday at Bell Field. Despite solid pitching and defense, Oxy bats couldn't come through and the Tigers dropped both games of the doubleheader.

Game 1: Pomona-Pitzer 2, Occidental College 0

The Tigers had the bases loaded in the bottom of the second and the fourth, but each time came up empty-handed in a 2-0 loss to the Sagehens Game 1.

In each inning, Ashley Noone (Orange) led off with a hit. In the second she hit a double in the right-field gap and in the fourth she singled to left.

Oxy had its best chance to score in the fourth, but Pomona-Pitzer second baseman Meagan Tokunaga made a diving stop on a sharply hit ground ball in the 3-4 gap by Mariah Montgomery, and threw to first for the third out of the inning.

Montgomery and Ali Goldberg (Los Altos) each singled in the seventh and the Tigers threatened with first and third before Pomona-Pitzer starter Fiona Riley finished off the shutout.

Goldberg started in place of Oxy ace Brittany Vacura (Elk Grove), who missed the game for family reasons. She gave up a pair of runs in the first before settling in nicely. She finished the game with just five hits and two earned runs against her in seven innings of work.

Kristine Kocjan (Redwood City) went 3 for 3 for the Tigers, Patricia Phillimeano (Roseville) went 2 for 3 and Oxy out-hit Pomona-Pitzer 9-5.

Aryana Yee was 3 for 4 with a run scored for Pomona-Pitzer.

Game 2: Pomona-Pitzer 6, Occidental 3

Jacqueline Shimamoto (Santa Clarita) hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the first and the Tigers led most of the game 2-1. But Pomona-Pitzer added a pair of runs in the fifth and three more in the seventh to beat Oxy 6-3 in Game 2.

Shimamoto finished 2 for 2 with two RBIs, a home run, a double and a run scored. She turned on a fast ball in the first, blasting a shot to left field that drove in Goldberg.

In the fifth, Ashley Morello hit an RBI-single and Lauren Boden had an RBI-double with two outs to give the Sagehens a 3-2 lead.

In the seventh, the Sagehens took advantage of an Oxy error and tacked on three more runs. Lauren Boden singled to left to plate Aryana Yee and two batters later, Caitlyn Hynes singled to right to bring home Boden and Morello.

Amber Garland (Torrance) was solid in 6.1 innings of work, allowing three runs while striking out two.

Oxy tried put on one final rally in the seventh. Julia Nicholson (Upland) tripled to deep right center with one out and Montgomery immediately singled down the left field line to push across Nicholson. However, Jerika Barron (Half Moon Bay) lined out the third and Goldberg  flied out to center end the game.
