CLAREMONT – The Occidental College softball team lost both games of a doubleheader at No. 18 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps even though Brittany Vacura (Elk Grove) kept the Tigers in it until the very end in Game 1.

Game 1: Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 1, Occidental 0

Vacura allowed just one run on five hits in another complete-game effort, but the Tigers offense could not string together enough hits against CMS' Hayley Schultz as they fell short 1-0 in Game 1.

Vacura issued a leadoff walk to Tara Robinson and an RBI double to Katie Savard in the bottom of the first for what turned out to be the game winner, but was solid the rest of the way. The senior scattered just four more hits in the final five innings and finished the day with five strikeouts in six innings pitched.

Ali Goldberg (Los Altos) had a multi-hit game for Oxy, beating out a pair of infield singles to shortstop in the first and fourth innings.

Game  2: Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 8, Occidental 0

Offensive woes continued for the Tigers as they were held to just one hit in five innings and lost 8-0 in Game 2.

CMS jumped out to a big early lead in the first inning. The first five hitters to bat for CMS all reached base and the Athenas used three hits and an Oxy error to scratch together four runs.

The Athenas scored in each of the next three innings to put the game out of reach for the Tigers.

Morgan Giusti (Millbrae) had the lone hit for Oxy, lacing a single to center in the fifth inning.

Oxy returns to action next Friday at 2 p.m. when they host Whittier for the final home series of the season. It is also Senior Day and the Tigers will celebrate the careers of five student-athletes who will be graduating this year.
