Box Score 2 LOS ANGELES — The Occidental softball team earned its first win of the season, beating Lewis & Clark in the first game of a doubleheader on Sunday.
Oxy improves to 1-5 overall.
Jerika Barron finished the day 3 for 6 with two runs scored and Jacqueline Shimamoto went 3 for 7 with two doubles, two RBIs and three runs for Oxy. Ali Goldberg earned the win in Game 1 and also batted 2 for 6 with a pair of runs scored.
Game 1: Occidental 6, Lewis & Clark 4
Goldberg was nails from the circle and freshman Alex Battest crushed a two-run home run in the fifth inning to lead Oxy past the Pioneers.
Goldberg had four strikeouts in seven innings pitched.
"Goldberg pitched a great game," Oxy head coach Ali Haehnel said. "She was tough, she hit her spots and our defense played well behind her."
Battest's bomb capped a three-run fifth that broke a 2-2 tie. After Goldberg scored on a wild pitch, Battest drove in Shimamoto with a towering blast to left.
"Alex has stepped up," Haehnel said. "She's getting really comfortable at the plate and had a big long ball today."
Five different Tigers recorded a pair of hits. Barron, Goldberg, Shimamoto, Battest and Meghan Luera each had two knocks.
Luera was also aggressive and heads up playing third base.
Madison Hollenbeck was charged with the loss after giving up five earned runs in five innings of work.
Hannah Dal Pra went 2 for 4 with home run and two RBIs for Lewis & Clark.
Game 2: Lewis & Clark 11, Occidental 4
The game was tied at three until Kelsey Buck crossed the plate on an error in the fourth. From there, the Pioneers added two more runs in the fifth, one in the sixth and four in the seventh.
Shimamoto and Amber Garland each had doubles for the Tigers. Shimamoto's scored Barron as part of a three-run first inning.
The Tigers didn't score again until the bottom of the seventh when Goldberg crossed the plate on a fielder's choice hit by Battest.
Kristine Kocjan had a single and a sacrifice fly for the Tigers.
Pra was 3 for 4 with four RBIs for Lewis & Clark.
Garland was charged with the loss after 5.1 innings of work, but also played well at second base.
