LOS ANGELES — Amber Garland pitched a solid six innings in Game 1 — giving up just three earned runs — and Jacqueline Shimamoto and Ali Goldberg both had great days at the plate.

But the Occidental softball team lost by a narrow margin in Game 1 and couldn't quite get over the hump in Game 2 in a doubleheader at Cal Lutheran on Saturday.

Shimamoto went 4 for 6 with a pair of RBIs and a double and Goldberg was 5 for 7 with a run scored.

The Tigers are back in action at San Diego Christian on March 10.

Game 1: Cal Lutheran 3, Occidental 1

Garland was solid on the mound, but the Regals were able to get two runs in the fourth and one more in the fifth to pull out the win.

"She was very effective at mixing speeds and kept hitters off balance," Haehnel said. "She led our defense. She set the tone, got ahead on hitters, hit her spots and got us a lot of ground-ball outs."

Jerika Barron scored Oxy's run in the fifth inning on a passed ball.

Goldberg and Shimamoto were each 2 for 3.

Shonna Christianson earned the win, throwing four innings, and also went 3 for 3 with two runs scored for Cal Lutheran.

Game 2: Cal Lutheran 11, Occidental 2 (5 innings)

Goldberg and Shimamoto both stayed hot in Game 2. Goldberg went 3 for 4, looking her best in the batter's box.

"She's got her timing back at the plate," Haehnel said. "She made great contact in every at bat, including her outs."

Goldberg also threw out a runner at the plate from left field in the bottom of the fourth.

Shimamoto broke through with an RBI-double in third inning, bringing Goldberg and Barron around to score.

"We'd kind of been knocking on the door the whole game," Haehnel said. "(Shimamoto) came up big with a clutch double."

Kristine Kocjan and Meghan Luera were solid behind the plate defensively for the Tigers.
