Box Score 2 CLAREMONT — The Tigers took Game 1 of a Friday doubleheader at Pomona-Pitzer on Friday.
Game 1: Occidental 4, Pomona-Pitzer 2
Emily Pham pitched a complete game and Ali Goldberg went 3 for 4 as the Tigers took down the Sagehens 4-2 in Game 1.
Pham earned her first win of the season, giving up just four hits and two earned runs in seven innings.
Goldberg had three singles and a run scored.
Morgan Giusti drove in a pair of runs for the Tigers. She walked with the bases loaded in the top of the first, scoring Goldberg, and doubled to center in the fifth, bringing home Jerika Barron.
The Tigers chipped away throughout the game — scoring a run in four different innings — building up a 4-0 lead after their half of the sixth. Eight different players combined for 10 hits. Along with Giusti and Goldberg, Barron, Kristine Kocjan, Jacqueline Shimamoto, Meghan Luera, Mariah Montgomery and Elissa Minamishin all recorded hits.
Pomona-Pitzer rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh before Pham got Quinn Sheehy to ground out back to the circle to end the game.
Bianca Cockrell pitched all seven innings for the Sagehens in a losing effort.
Game 2: Pomona-Pitzer 7, Occidental 4
Goldberg, Shimamoto and Alex Battest each had two hits, but the Tigers couldn't string together back-to-back victories, losing 7-4 in Game 2.
With Shimamoto on second and two outs in the top of the seventh, Barron hit a long fly ball to left center that just missed making it a one-run game, but the ball stayed inside the fence and was caught for the final out.
Shimamoto, who is third in the league in hitting (.460), was 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs and a double in the third that scored Goldberg.
Goldberg was 2 for 3 with a pair of runs scored.
Alex Battest was 2 for 3 with an RBI-double for the Tigers.
Eden Griffin earned the win for the Sagehens.
The Tigers return home to finish the season at Bell Field on Saturday, facing Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in a doubleheader. Game 1 starts at noon.
