LOS ANGELES — Cal Lutheran is on an entirely different level in women's volleyball.
Oxy gave the Reglas their best crack, but keeping up with the nation's No. 2 team was just too much to ask of the Tigers, who started five freshmen on Tuesday.
Players of the Match: Claire Strohm had a relatively good night attacking against a tall and athletic Regals defensive front. The freshman outside hitter finished with nine kills, totaled four digs and had three aces.
Strohm came into the match leading Oxy with 2.81 kills per set.
Cal Lu was led by 6-foot-3 Colorado St. transfer Michelle Lawrence, who had 13 kills on .522 hitting, and Hope Stewart who also had 13.
Turning Point: After dropping the first set, Oxy was much more competitive in the second. Led by Strohm, Oxy was within four, trailing 20-16. But then the Tigers lost momentum on a rotation error and with that any hope of taking the set and climbing back into the match.
Cal Lutheran the team to beat: The Regals are the defending SCIAC champions and were the NCAA Division III runner up last season. With the win, they improve to 13-1 overall.
Next Match: The Tigers get another crack at a SCIAC opponent at Pomona-Pitzer on Friday at 7:30. p.m.
