LOS ANGELES — Alex Battest came up with big hits, Dallas Boyce and Megan Maher combined for a solid team effort in the circle and the Occidental softball team beat Augsburg 6-3 in Game 1 of a non-conference doubleheader at Bell Field on Sunday.

Battest went 2 for 3 with a pair of RBIs, including a double to right field that scored two and ignited a four-run Oxy third inning.

"Alex was clutch at the plate today," Oxy head coach Ali Haehnel said. "As a team, we made good adjustments at the plate throughout the course of the game and stayed aggressive."

The Tigers were trailing 2-0 up until that point.

Kaitlin Cappetto also had an RBI-single in the bottom of the third inning.

Oxy never gave up the lead. Holding a 4-3 advantage, the Tigers added two insurance runs in the sixth. Olivia Thayer singled to left, bringing home Kasi Whitaker, and Dallas Gunny grounded into a fielder's choice, scoring Cappetto.

The Tigers got a great tag-team effort from Boyce in Maher, who combined to pitch all seven innings without an earned run. Maher went the first 2.1 innings, striking out two, and then Boyce put the game into cruise control throughout the course of the next 4.2 innings, giving up just two hits, with six strikeouts, for the win.

"We did a great job pitching as a staff today," Haehnel said.

Seven different Tigers combined for 10 hits.
