Box Score LOS ANGELES — Occidental freshman pitcher Olivia Thayer went the distance in dominating fashion, leading the Occidental softball team to a 2-0 victory over Augsburg in the second game of a non-conference doubleheader at Bell Field on Sunday.
The Tigers sweep the Auggies, wining consecutive games for the first time this season, improving to 5-13 overall.
Augsburg falls to 2-6.
Thayer, allowed just three hits and a walk, striking out seven batters for the shutout and her best career outing for the Tigers.
"She had really good stuff today, she hit her spots, got ahead in the count and led us defensively," Oxy head coach Ali Haehnel said. "She mixed speeds effectively and was domininat form start to finish."
Oxy pitched well all day Sunday, with three different pitchers combining for 14 innings without an earned run.
"I was really proud of all three of our pitchers today, they were fantastic," Haehnel said. "But our defense was also outstanding behind them. We played mistake-free softball in the field in the second game and anytime you couple with strong pitching with perfect defense, you are in a perfect position to compete."
Oxy freshman shortstop Samantha Yee anchored its defense, making challenging plays at shortstop look easy and even gunning down runners at first on slow-rolling balls that could have been hits.
"We're really proud of her effort and her leadership," Haehnel said. "She's a quiet leader who we can depend on to get the job done."
The Tigers took Game 1, 6-3. Megan Maher went 2.1 innings and Dallas Boyce pitched 4.2.
In Game 2, Mackensie Priley scored on a fielding error, putting Oxy up 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning, and Alex Battest, who was hot in Game 1, drove in the Tigers' second run with a RBI-single that brought in Yee in the fourth.
Battest went 1 for 2 with an RBI and a walk on the game, and 3 for 5 with three RBIs on the day.
"Alex really stepped up today," Haehnel said. "She was a good leader behind the plate, taking charge, and was a great RBI producer for us."
Boyce was 1 for 3 in Game 2.
Next Game: Oxy returns to SCIAC play on March 21, hosting Pomona-Pitzer for a doubleheader, starting at noon.
