Box Score LOS ANGELES — Alex Battest left the yard for a Grand slam and Dallas Gunny brought in the winning run as the Tigers beat Cal Lutheran in a 10-inning thriller, 7-6 on Friday afternoon
With bases loaded in the bottom of the 10th inning, Oxy left fielder Dallas Gunny connected on a pitch to shortstop to bring in Morgan Giusti for the win.
"I knew I just needed to make contact," Gunny said. "We didn't want to go another extra inning. We only had one out so I knew it wasn't the end of the world if I messed up, but I really wanted to execute."
Dallas has made a major contribution to the Tigers squad this season both in the outfield defensively and as an improving hitter.
"Dallas has been a spark plug for our team all year," said head coach Ali Haehnel. "She wants it so much, her will power and strong mental game really helps her success. I'm glad she was put in that position so everyone could see her hard work pay off."
It wasn't the first time a Tiger came through with the bases juiced.
After a slow start offensively, Alex Battest got the Tigers going late in the game. With Oxy trailing 4-1 in the bottom of the 5th inning, catcher Battest stepped up to the plate for the Tigers and hit a bomb to dead center field, sailing over fence for the Grand slam. The hit scored Samantha Yee, Mariah Montgomery, and Mackensie Priley, giving the Tigers the 5-4 lead. Battest finished the game 2 for 5 with four RBIs and two runs scored.
"We've relied on Alex offensively all year," Haehnel said. "It was great to see her go in like it was any other at bat and take care of it for us."
Dallas Boyce was outstanding in the circle for the Tigers, pitching all 10 innings. The freshman struck out three and allowed only two earned runs.
Kasi Whitaker made a great defensive play in the top of the sixth inning, throwing out a runner at home from right field on what would've been the go ahead run.
Priley helped extend the game for the Tigers, making a diving catch at second base, stopping a would be double in the top of the eighth inning.
"We've been pressing really hard all week, it's nice to see hard work pay off," Haehnel continued. "We did a lot of little things rights. Offensively we were strong all day. Everyone hit well and it was great to see it come through in the end."
Next Game: The Tigers finish the doubleheader at 5:30.
