Herold's 18 Kills Not Enough Against Pomona

LOS ANGELES — Oxy sophomore hitters Amanda Herold and Claire Strohm continued their impressive attacking, combining for 33 kills.

But the Occidental women's volleyball team let the second set slip and lost a few tight sets, falling to Pomona-Pitzer 3-2 at Rush Gymnasium on Saturday.

Set Scores: 21-25, 26-24, 22-25, 25-23, 15-3

Herold led the game with 18 kills and Strohm, who put down 22 kills in a win at Redlands on Friday, finished with 15. Along with their offense was some impressive defense and passing. Strohm had a team-high 19 digs and Herold had 17.

Oxy setter Tiareh Cruz had 23 assists and three aces.

Sophie Janssen led Pomona-Pitzer with 15 kills and Stephanie Sun added 10.

Season Impact: Oxy falls to 2-4 overall and 1-1 in SCIAC play. The Sagehens improve to 6-1 and 2-1.

Game 1: Herold recorded four kills, Strohm had five digs and the Tigers got a pair of key aces from Strohm and Allie Sundara late in the set, taking a 1-0 lead in the match. 

Kate Porter and Stephanie Sun both had three kills for the Sagehens.

Game 2: The Tigers let one slip in Game 2. Oxy was up 18-10 at one point and even had a 24-22 edge, but couldn't hang on. Strohm led Oxy with five kills on .556 hitting and Sarah Beene had six assists and one kill during the set. 

Pomona-Pitzer got five kills from Julia Zwaal.

Game 3: After being unable to hold a 24-22 lead in Game 2, Oxy found itself in the same position again in the third set, but this time Strohm sealed the deal with an attack from the outside to put Oxy back up 2-1 in the match. Herold had an impressive eight kills on .467 hitting in the third.

Jessica Fin had five assists in the set for Pomona-Pitzer. 

Game 4: Oxy fell behind 5-0 and never fully recovered as the Sagehens evened the match. The Tigers cut the lead to one three times, once at 16-15, again at 21-20 and finally at 24-23 before Herold's last attack on the 25th point went long. 

Game 5: After scoring the first point of the set, Pomona-Pitzer rattled off the next eight points, putting the game out of reach. 

Next Match: The Tigers are back at home against La Verne on Sept. 25 at 7:30 p.m.
