Box Score 2 LOS ANGELES — The Occidental softball team split its SCIAC opener with Pomona-Pitzer, taking the first game of the doubleheader and losing the second.
Season Impact: The Tigers' record is now 2-4 overall and 1-1 in SCIAC.
Pomona-Pitzer goes to 2-5 and 1-1.
Game 1: Occidental 6, Pomona-Pitzer 5
Bailey Stevens and Cora Roberts led offensively and defensively as Tigers took the first game, 6-5.
Roberts, a first year shortstop, went 1 for 2 with 2 RBIs and a run scored. She also made, "great plays look routine in the field," according to Oxy head coach Ali Haehnel.
Stevens, also a first year, helped Oxy starter Dallas Boyce through a complete game, keeping her in the zone, and had great command of the Tigers' defense. Offensively, Stevens was 2 for 3 with a run scored.
Liz Rodarte was charged with the loss for the Sagehens.
Mariah Montgomery stayed hot at the plate for the Tigers, going 1 for 3 with 2 RBIs. Montgomery is 5 of 12 with 4 RBIs through six games played.
The Tigers scored three in the fourth and one more in the fifth to break a 2-2 tie.
Pomona-Pitzer made the game interesting with two outs in the top of the seventh when Bianca Cockrell hit a three-run homer, but the Tigers stayed poised and closed out the victory.
Game 2: Pomona-Pitzer 8, Occidental 0
Cockrell shut down the Tigers in Game 2, pitching five scoreless innings with just three hits. She also contributed to Pomona-Pitzer's offense, hitting a solo home run in the top of the second.
The Sagehens rallied for six runs in the top of the first to take immediate control of the game.
Priley, Kira Elliot and Alexis Funaki were the only Tigers to get hits.
Oxy starter Olivia Thayer took the loss, pitching five innings with four earned runs charged against her.
Next Game: The Tigers are back in action next Saturday, hosting Chapman in a doubleheader at Bell Field.
