Battest Stays Hot in Hawaii Game 2

Box Score

LAIE, HAWAII — Alex Battest crushed the ball all day long, going 4 for 4 with two RBIs in Game 2, and 6 for 7 overall in a pair of games at BYU-Hawaii on Monday.

But despite Battest's hot bat, Oxy was unable to steal a game from the NCAA Division II Seasiders, losing Game 2, 6-4.

Oxy starter Madison Romero had a solid outing in the circle, giving up just two earned in four innings pitched.

Alexis Funaki and Bailey Stevens both went 2 for 4 for the Tigers. Funaki also pitched two innings in relief.

The Tigers racked up 10 hits in Game 2, a far better performance at the plate than their quiet three-hit Game 1.

The Seasiders capitalized on an Oxy error in the first inning to score an unearned run and take an early 1-0 lead. Sarah Captain hit into a fielder's choice with the bases loaded, bringing in Tiffany Smith.

Oxy took a 2-1 lead in the top of the second and had a chance for more. Natalie Glover drove in Stephanie Stamnies with a fielder's choice and then Alex Battest knocked in Cora Roberts with a sharly hit grounder up the middle. Battest rounded first and headed to second base, but it was already occupied. When she realized it and tried to get back to first she was picked off and the Tigers left the bases loaded.

BYU-Hawaii jumped back in front 3-2 in the bottom half of the second when Smith doubled in a pair of runs with a shot in the left-center gap.

Battest had another crack at an RBI with a two-out single to left in the fourth, but Kira Elliot was called out at home on a bang bang play.

The Tigers threatened again in the fifth. Bailey Stevens led off the inning with a stand-up triple that bounced just inside the right-field line, but the Tigers left her hanging, 60 feet away.

BYU-Hawaii extended its lead to 5-2 with a run in the fourth and fifth.

Mackensie Priley doubled in Samantha Yee for Oxy's third run and then Battest singled Priley in to cut the lead to 5-4 in the sixth.

BYU-Hawaii added an insurance run in the bottom half of the six.
