LOS ANGELES — First year center fielder Nyla Gatison and sophomore shortstop Cora Roberts keep crushing the ball, and Madison Romero pitched five good innings in relief as the Occidental softball team beat Pomona-Pitzer 7-3 in Game 2 of a doubleheader on Saturday.
The Tigers sweep the Sagehens after Dallas Boyce pitched a shut out in a 5-0 Oxy win in Game 1.
Gatison went 3 for 4 with an RBI and two runs scored on the game, and 5 for 8 on the day, with four runs scored and two stolen bases. She's hitting .484 overall and is leading the SCIAC in hitting at an incredible .500.
Gatison is riding a nine-game hitting streak and has gotten at least one hit in all but four of Oxy's games this year.
Roberts extended her own hitting streak to eight games, going 2 for 4 with a pair of RBIs. She went 4 for 8 with four RBIs on the day.
"Right now the team is really trusting the process and playing cohesively," Oxy head coach Ali Haehnel said. "Cora has been clutch and our hitters are hitting with confidence."
Romero earned the victory, giving up just one hit, one walk and one earned run. She also went 1 for 2 with a triple and a run scored to help her own cause.
"Madi came in and shut down opposing hitters," Heahnel said. "She really trusted her stuff today and made the ball move really well."
Mackensie Priley was 2 for 2 with a run scored and two RBIs for Oxy.
The Tigers fell behind 2-1 and then rallied for four runs in the fourth to take control of the game, and added two more in the fifth.
Season Impact: The Tigers have won three in a row, improving to 7-13 overall and 5-7 in SCIAC play.
Pomona-Pitzer falls to 6-15 and 3-8.
Next Game: Oxy is back in action on Sunday, hosting Williams for a non-conference doubleheader. Game 1 is scheduled for a noon first pitch.
