Oxy Beats Redlands for First SCIAC Win

LOS ANGELESSabrina Degnan and Jacqueline Rutherfurd led the way as the Occidental women's volleyball team broke through with a 3-1 win over Redlands for its first SCIAC win of the season on Saturday. 

Degnan had a team-high 12 kills and 11 digs, Rutherfurd had 10 kills on .500 hitting and five blocks, Allie Sundara had 21 assists and eight digs, and Taylor Gorretta and Madelene Sellergren each had seven kills. Lauren Duffy added six kills. 

Hannah Lanyon led the Bulldogs with nine kills. 

Oxy lost a close five-set match to La Verne at home and has struggled against some of the SCIAC's nationally-ranked teams.

Game 1: Occidental 25, Redlands 18

Trailing 17-13, Oxy called a timeout and regrouped. From that point on Oxy went on a 12-1 run to close the set and take Game 1.

Madelene Sellergren had three kills during the run, including smashing a pair of overpasses by Redlands on solid Oxy serves. Gorretta also had a pair of kills during the run. 

Degnan and Jacqueline Rutherfurd each had three kills in the set for Oxy.

Game 2: Occidental 25, Redlands 21

Oxy cut Redlands lead to 18-16, but made too many errors down the stretch, falling in the second set. 

Natalie Starlin was dominant for the Bulldogs, putting down seven kils on .600 hitting . 

Rutherfurd had a big set with four kills. 

Sellergren and Gorretta each had a pair of kills for Oxy. 

Game 3: Occidental 25, Redlands 16

The Tigers jumped out to a 7-1 lead to take control of the momentum of the set and match.

Redlands made a run to get within 14-10, but Oxy countered with a 4-0 run.

Sabrina Degnan had six kills for Oxy and Sydney Takauye had 10 digs during the set. 

Game 4: Occidental 25, Redlands 19

With the score tied at 8-8, Rutherfurd and Theresa Nevins teammed up for a pair of blocks, Minassians had an ace and Redlands made a couple of errors, putting Oxy out in front 13-8.

Oxy never led by less than three points for the rest of the set.

The Tigers were strong at the net with four blocks. 

Season Impact: Oxy improves to 4-9 overall and 1-6 in SCIAC.

Redlands falls to 7-8 and 1-6 in SCIAC. 

Next Match: The Tigers are back in action at Caltech at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
