Box Score 2 LOS ANGELES — Delaney Russell was terrific and Cassie Carter got the big hit as the Occidental women's softball team picked up its first win of the season in dramatic fashion, beating Brandeis 5-4 in the second game of a doubleheader at Bell Field on Sunday.
Russell went 3 for 4 with four RBIs at first base in the game and finished the day 4-8 with five RBIs, along with pitching Game 1 in a 7-3 loss.
With runners on first and second and one out in the ninth inning, Carter ripped a ball just over the head of a ducking Haley Carlton at first base, bringing in Abbott Hoeven for the winning run.
"I'm so proud of the girls today," said first year interim coach Kelliner Croushore, who picks up her first career victory. "They really fought both games and to see it come full circle for the them for the win against a good program like Brandeis was absolutely fantastic. They worked so hard, never wavered and trusted the process."
Aurora Funaro was solid for the Tigers in the circle, going the distance with four earned runs, three strikeouts, three walks and six hits. She was in a few tight spots, but kept runs off the board and stayed poised.
"She had to battle through some tough innings against a good hitting team, but she persevered and got it done," Croushore said.
Season Impact: Oxy improves to 1-3 on the season.
Next Game: The Tigers are back in action against George Fox on Sunday.
