Lindsay shines as Softball splits on day two

HONOLULU, Hawaii — Occidental College had a mixed day at Sand Island State Recreational Area on Tuesday, experiencing a narrow defeat to Kenyon College with a final score of 5-6 before rebounding with a decisive 10-0 victory over the University of Minnesota-Morris.

In the first game against Kenyon College, Occidental collected eight hits, including two doubles, while producing five runs but was unable to overcome Kenyon's three-run surge in the seventh inning. The game began with Kenyon taking an early lead with two runs in the first inning. Montgomery scored on an RBI single by Kuban, and Kuban later crossed home on a double by Green. Occidental responded with Riko Hibino doubling and advancing to third on a groundout, eventually scoring on a groundout by Alysha Wagner, leaving the score 2-1 after the first inning.

Kenyon extended its lead in the third inning when Schlissberg tripled and scored on a single by McLaughlin, putting the Tigers at a 3-1 disadvantage. Occidental narrowed the gap in the fourth inning, with Wagner singling, advancing on a double by Sophia Siu, and scoring on a single by Lehua Acoba, making it 3-2.

In the fifth inning, Occidental took a 4-3 lead. Hibino reached on a single and scored due to a throwing error, followed by Anna Kim scoring on Wagner's sacrifice fly. However, Kenyon's seventh inning proved pivotal, featuring a homer from Montgomery, a walk from Schlissberg, and a triple by McLaughlin, which led to a final score of 6-5 in favor of Kenyon. Wagner posted two RBIs, and Hibino recorded two hits and two runs scored, while Palacio secured two stolen bases. Acoba pitched 6 1/3 innings, striking out four batters and contributing one RBI.

In the second game against Minnesota-Morris, Occidental showcased an impressive offensive performance, starting strong with eight runs in the first inning. Jacynda Lindsay pitched a complete game shutout, allowing only three hits and striking out three batters. The Tigers took control early, with Riko Hibino singling and advancing to second, setting the stage for Anna Kim's double that pushed Hibino to third. Wagner followed with a double, scoring Hibino, and Sophia Siu hit a 2-RBI double, bringing home both Kim and Wagner. Lindsay added an RBI single, and Amarie Bolen's single drove in another run. Sam Palacio capped off the inning with a 2-RBI double, establishing an 8-0 lead.

In the second inning, Wagner doubled and advanced to third on an error, with Siu's sacrifice fly bringing her home to increase the lead to 9-0. Occidental added one more in the third inning when Hibino doubled and advanced to third on a throwing error, allowing Bolen to score. The final score was a commanding 10-0 victory for Occidental, with Wagner recording two runs and two doubles, Siu driving in three runs, and Bolen contributing two hits and one RBI.
