Softball swept at Chapman

ORANGE, Calif. — Occidental College faced Chapman University in two challenging matchups at El Camino Real Park, falling in both games with final scores of 4-2 and 9-1.

In the first game, Occidental fell to Chapman 4-2. Chapman took an early lead, scoring twice in the first inning, while Occidental managed five hits and two runs throughout the game. In a tightly contested battle, Riko Hibino tripled to right center in the third inning and later scored on an RBI single by Alysha Wagner, narrowing the deficit. By the end of the third inning, the score stood at Chapman 4, Occidental 1. 

In the sixth inning, Anna Kim made an impact with a single and two stolen bases. She scored on a fielder's choice by Jordan Lebsock, bringing Occidental closer as the inning concluded with Chapman leading 4-2. Despite a valiant effort by Occidental, the game ended with a final score of Chapman 4, Occidental 2.

Anna Kim showcased her speed with two stolen bases and added two hits in her performance. Riko Hibino contributed with a triple, scoring once and recording a hit. Alysha Wagner drove in a run with one hit, while Jordan Lebsock matched her with an RBI and a hit. At this point, Occidental held a record of 4-22 and 1-10 in the SCIAC conference, while Chapman stood at 23-7 and 8-3 in the SCIAC conference.

In the second game, Occidental again faced Chapman, ultimately falling with a final score of 9-1. The home team gained an early advantage as Chapman scored four runs in the first inning, highlighted by Shea Higa's triple that brought in Mia Reyes, setting the score at 4-0. Despite Riko Hibino reaching first on an error and Jordan Lebsock singling, Occidental could not capitalize in the first inning.

Chapman extended its lead to 5-0 in the second inning with a sacrifice fly by Sam Mather. Occidental managed to secure its lone run in the third inning. Hibino singled and advanced to third on an additional single by Anna Kim, later scoring on a sacrifice fly by Alysha Wagner. However, Chapman quickly answered with a run of its own, maintaining a six-run lead at 6-1.

The Panthers continued their scoring in the fourth inning with a sacrifice bunt by Ava Fagin, making it 7-1. In the fifth inning, Chapman scored twice more, with Milla Fukuda's triple and a groundout by Higa bringing in the runs, concluding the game at 9-1 in favor of Chapman.

In this game, Hibino contributed with a hit and scored a run while also adding a stolen base. Kim recorded two hits and a stolen base in her performance. Wagner reached base twice with two walks and drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. Courtney Miles pitched a complete game, throwing 87 pitches over 4 2/3 innings, despite allowing nine earned runs. 

Following these games, Occidental's record now stands at 4-23 and 1-11 in the SCIAC, while Chapman's record improved to 24-7, holding a 9-3 conference record in the SCIAC.
