LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Occidental lost to La Verne 3-1 on Saturday at Rush Gymnasium. Occidental hit .077 with 36 kills, while La Verne finished at .244 with 55 kills.
Set scores were 14-25, 22-25, 25-23 and 15-25. It was the first time in since 2022 the Tigers took a set off La Verne.
Occidental spent the opening set trying to recover after La Verne scored the first four points and later pushed the margin to 20-10.
Sloane Shoop helped Occidental answer early with consecutive kills from
Kendall Taylor, and the Tigers added points through kills by
Anna Curtis-Revelle,
Audrey Makler,
Corinne Van Haeren,
Jasmine Shum and
Chloe Jeong. La Verne finished the set 25-14.
Occidental created separation in the second set with a 7-0 run from 9-6 to 16-6, including kills by Makler and
Jasmine Shum and a service ace from Curtis-Revelle. Taylor later added an ace for an 18-7 Occidental lead, but La Verne answered with a late push and tied the set at 21-21. The sequence ended with La Verne in front, 24-23.
Occidental turned an 18-17 deficit into a 22-18 lead in the third set, with Curtis-Revelle putting down the tying kill and then serving through four straight points. La Verne pulled back within 24-23, but
Jasmine Shum finished the set with a kill from Taylor to give Occidental a 25-23 win.
Occidental could not recover after La Verne turned a 10-6 score into a 15-6 advantage and later moved ahead 23-10 in the fourth set. The home side answered late with three straight points, including a
Jasmine Shum/Makler block and a Taylor service ace, before La Verne closed the set 25-15.
