LOS ANGELES, Calif. (April 28, 2007) - Spencer Woolwine '09 hit
a three-run homer to center field in the eighth inning and
struck out the side in the ninth to lift the Occidental baseball
team to a 9-6 win over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Saturday, April 28 at
Anderson Field.
The comeback victory halted a seven-game losing streak for
Occidental, which finished the season at 17-23 overall, 7-13 SCIAC.
CMS took game two 6-0 and finished at 18-22, 10-11 SCIAC
Both teams combined for eleven runs over the last three innings
in game one. Tyler Colville'07 doubled to lead off the seventh and
later scored on a base hit by Seth Goss '08. Matt Andersen '08, who
went two for four with four runs batted in, followed with a two-run
double to right-center that gave Oxy a 6-5 lead.
Player of the Year Candidate Morgan Cummins tied the game in the
top of the eighth with an RBI single to score Andrew Blomberg, who
had reached third after an errant pickoff attempt.
Jason Jebbia '10 reached on a fielders' choice and Goss singled
in the bottom of the eighth to set the table for Woolwine.
Marcus Stoiber '09 pitched an inning and a third to pick up the
win, his fourth of the season. Matt Jones '09 allowed three earned
runs in 6 1/3 innings while striking out two and walking four.
Phillip Urso struck out 15 to lead the Stags in game two.
Occidental managed just three hits in the contest and didn't
advance a runner to third base until the ninth inning.
The Tigers turned three double plays, including an
unconventional 3-6-1 that killed a Stags' rally in the third.
Andersen made a diving catch in center to end the fourth inning.
Occidental boosted its batting average from .263 to .293 in 2007
and posted a two-win improvement in the SCIAC standings. The Tigers
will return eight starters and most of their core talent in 2008.
