THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (March 28, 2008) –
Matthew Jones tossed 8.0 innings and the Tigers
combined for 17 hits as Occidental College defeated California
Lutheran University 10-5 at George “Sparky” Anderson
Field on Friday afternoon in Southern California Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference play.
Oxy jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first on
an RBI single by catcher Adam Franks, scoring
shortstop Case Miyahira who drew a walk and stole
second base. CLU's sophomore first baseman Paul Hartman tied
the game in the bottom of the second with a solo homerun to left
field on the first pitch of the inning.
The Tigers re-took the lead in the third when Patrick
Sarkissian brought in Glenn Gray on a
fielder's choice. In the following inning Oxy added another
run as Miyahira drove in Jason Jebbia who singled
and stole second.
CLU got a run back in its half of the fourth with an RBI single
from Richard Michelin, scoring Hartmann who had doubled deep to the
right field corner.
The Tigers responded with a big fifth inning as they scored four
runs on four hits. They added three runs in the eighth to bring
their total to 10 and the Kingsmen tacked on three runs in the
ninth to total five in the contest.
Jones scattered eight hits over eight innings, allowing five runs
while striking out three. Freshman southpaw Kris
Suzuki took the ball in the ninth to close things out for
the Tigers. Robbie Seldon was charged with the loss for Kingsmen
after going 4.0 innings.
Franks and Geoff Ball each
connected for three hits with two RBI's. Sarkissian and
Richie Veihl also drove in a pair apiece. Franks,
Gray and Matt Andersen each crossed the plate
twice in the victory.
Occidental was aggressive on the base paths,
stealing six bases in the game, as Ball led the way with three and
Jebbia swiped two.
Hartmann finished the game 3-for-4 with three runs scored, an RBI
and a stolen base. CLU designated hitter Richard Michelin was
2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored.
Occidental improves to 10-13, 2-5 in SCIAC action while Cal
Lutheran falls to 8-13-1, 2-4 SCIAC. The teams
will finish the three game series at Anderson Field on Saturday,
March 29 with a double header beginning at 11:00 a.m.
