LOS ANGELES, Calif. (April 19, 2008) –
After opening the series with a 5-4 come-from-behind win at
Anderson Field on Friday afternoon, the Tigers endured a
disappointing sweep by the University of La Verne Saturday
afternoon on the road in Southern California Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference play.
In game one the Tigers were doubled up by the
Leopards, falling 8-4. Oxy went up 2-1 in the top of the fifth
inning, but quickly lost that lead as ULV produced four runs in the
bottom of the inning. La Verne tacked on three more in the seventh.
Oxy pushed two runners across the place in a
late come-back attempt, but fell short.
Sophomore left fielder Glenn
Gray led the offense with a 3-for-4 day, driving in a pair
and drawing a walk. Jason Jebbia also had a
three-hit day as the designated hitter. Freshman second baseman
Daniel Kelley scored two of the four Tiger runs.
Game two was more of the same as the Leos
handed the Tigers a 13-4 loss to end the series. Oxy pitchers were
tagged for 16 hits in the game while collecting only six.
Oxy jumped out to a 1-0 lead, but a leadoff
homerun for the Leos tied things at 1-1.
Rookie shortstop Case
Miyahira stroked a bases clearing double in the fifth to
tie the game up 4-4. That was as close as the Tigers would get as
ULV scored eight runs over the final four innings while holding Oxy
scoreless.
Jebbia was 2-for-2 with a run, walk and stolen
base before injuring his shoulder in the fifth inning. Freshman
Alex Bukac entered for Jebbia and went 1-for-2
with a run scored. Tigers centerfielder Matt
Andersen drew three walks in the game.
Kris Suzuki (1-2) took the
loss in game one before Brooks Belter (3-4) suffered the loss in
the nightcap.
The Tigers fall to 12-20, 4-11 in SCIAC play
while the Leos improve to 19-14, 10-4.
Occidental will host The Masters College on
Wednesday, April 23 in their final non-conference game of the
season. First pitch is slated for 3:00 p.m. on Anderson Field.
