WHITTIER, Calif. (April 25, 2008)
– Occidental College saw a 5-1 lead
disappear, turning into a 12-6 loss Friday afternoon at Memorial
Field on the campus of Whittier College in Southern California
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play.
After Whittier took an early 1-0 lead, the
Tigers plated men in the second, third, fifth and seventh innings
to build a 5-1 lead. Case Miyahira and
Adam Franks both tripled and scored for the Tigers
while Glenn Gray drove in a pair, scoring once.
Both Daniel Kelley and Matt
Andersen drove in a run as well.
Gray hit a sac fly in the third to score
Miyahira and then scored in the fifth after walking before Franks
tripled. He then drove in Jason Jebbia, who
singled, in the seventh.
The Poet bats came back in the seventh with
five runs on four hits and three walks to take a 6-5 lead.
Geoff Ball connected for a
solo homerun over the right center field fence to tie the game up
at 6-6.
Whittier stormed back with six runs in the
eighth, sparked by a grand slam off the bat of Anthony Capelletti,
to take the lead, and lock up the win.
Brooks Belter tossed 6.0
strong innings for the Tigers, scattering three hits while striking
out five. Kieran Doherty took the loss after
allowing three hits and five earned runs in .2 inning of work.
Poets junior
Justin Armijo earned the victory, his third of the season, after
throwing 8.0 innings.
Occidental and
Whittier will finish their three-game series Saturday morning at
Anderson Field with first pitch scheduled for 11:00
a.m.
