LOS ANGELES, Calif. (May 2, 2008) – Many
things happened today on Anderson Field that anyone involved will
not soon forget. The offensive explosion that began on Friday
afternoon in Pasadena carried over to Anderson Field today in the
final Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference
double-header of the 2008 season. On top of that three Oxy pitchers
combined for a no-hitter and one senior played all nine positions
in nine innings.
Oxy jumped out to an early 8-0 lead in the
first inning of game one and cruised to 21-2 and 11-0 victories
over Caltech to cap off the '08 season.
In a senior day to remember, four year starter
and two-time All-SCIAC player, Matt Andersen
completed a feat never before attempted during his playing days: he
played all nine positions in his final collegiate baseball game.
Andersen started at shortstop, where he earned
Second Team All-SCIAC honors his freshman season, moving around to
third, second and first base where he recorded an out at each
position. For the first time in his life he put on the gear to
catch for Noel Banuelos who faced the minimum
number of batters possible during his 7.0 shutout innings. Andersen
then moved back out to familiar territory, with an inning in left
field, before finding his way back to his normal center field. In
the eighth inning he took the ball from Banuelos to face three
batters, striking out a pair. In the final inning Andersen made his
way out to right field for two outs before being replaced. Not only
did he move around the field, he was a homerun shy of a cycle as he
donned black and orange for the final time.
At the plate he was 6-for-9 with two triples,
five runs and three RBIs, also reaching base when he was hit by a
pitch in game one.
Fellow four-year senior Adam
Franks was 3-for-6 with a double, three runs and two
walks. He played in his primary position behind the plate while
appearing at third and first base. Franks had 16 putouts
Returning from a concussion, Seth
Goss, who was 3-for-3 yesterday in the first inning with a
pair of homeruns and a double, went 3-for-3 with a three-run
homerun, scoring two runs, stealing a base and driving in a total
of four in the first game. He played second base, third base and
shortstop, recording two putouts and an assist in the
double-header.
Geoff Cromwell finished the
day 5-for-8 with two runs and an RBI. He had three putouts and two
assists playing left field, third base, second base and catching.
After missing most of the season with an
injury, Donny Baarnes, was 2-for-6 with a double,
two RBIs and a run scored. He pinch hit in game one, reaching on a
fielder's choice before scoring. Baarnes started game two as
the designated hitter before moving to first base where he had one
putout.
Junior Matthew Jones (4-6)
earned the game one win after throwing 5.0 innings, allowing one
run on two hits while striking out nine. Banuelos got his first win
of the season in game two as he struck out five over seven innings.
The only batter to reach base was the leadoff batter in the sixth
inning. He was quickly retired on a 4-3-6 double play.
Banuelos, Andersen and Kieran
Doherty combined to face the minimum number of batters in
the Tigers' no-hitter.
Fifteen different Tigers recorded a hit today.
Occidental junior transfer Ryan Falck was 3-for-3
on the day with three RBIs and two runs scored. Daniel
Kelley, Dale Garrett, Glenn Gray, Spencer Woolwine and
Geoff Ball each had a pair of hits. Mike
Zugsmith, William Ireton, and Case
Miyahira each had a hit as well. Aaron
Stanton's only hit of the day was a grand slam down the
leftfield line in the sixth inning of game one.
Occidental finishes the season with a 15-24
overall record and a 7-14 mark in SCIAC play.
