LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Oct. 14, 2009) – The University of
Redlands Bulldogs visited the Occidental College campus today to
face the Tigers on Patterson Field, and left Oxy with a Southern
California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory. The Tigers,
fought hard throughout the game and nearly scored several times,
but the Redlands offense maintained the Bulldogs lead.
Starting the game at center mid-fielder for the first time was
freshman Daniel Watson who played very well
commanding the offense and had a great shot that nearly went in to
put the Tigers up at the beginning of the game.
Occidental's defense held strong for nearly the entire
game, holding Redlands to only 11 shots the entire game. The
defense, led by Kosa Goucher-Lambert and
Reid Sakamoto in the first half, prevented any and
all attacks until the first Bulldog goal at the 31st
minute of the first half. The goal, a quick cross near the Tiger
goal line, proved too fast for the Tigers and starting keeper,
Andrew Larkin.
Although the Bulldogs lead the entire game, the first half
belonged to the Tigers, who had 10 of their 13 shots in the first
half while limiting the Bulldogs to six. The attack during the
first half, led by starting forwards Skylar Roush
and Deryck Lim, created several opportunities for
the Tigers, but Oxy was unable to capitalize on them.
During the second half, despite the efforts of the second Tiger
keeper, Ian Powell, and forward Ben
Murray, Occidental again could not benefit from its
efforts. The defense also seemed to let down as the Bulldogs attack
scored two more goals as the Tigers lost 3-0. A promising start by
the Tigers and the strength of the first players was just not
enough to hold Oxy against the speed of the Bulldogs offense.
Roush finished with three shots while Kyle
Scoble had two and starting in the field, for the first
time of his career after being transformed from a goal keeper,
freshman Chris Liotta also had a shot in the game.
The Tigers' whose record falls to 3-6 in conference and
4-8 overall, will host the Cal Lutheran University Kingsmen at
11:00 a.m. on Patterson Field this Saturday, Oct. 17.
