LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Feb. 28, 2009) – For the second
straight weekend the Tigers were swept in Southern California
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on the diamond against
Pomona-Pitzer this weekend.
After an 18-4 routing on Anderson Field Friday afternoon, the
Tigers traveled to Claremont, Calif. where they challenged the
Sagehens in game one of a twin bill on Saturday, losing 9-4, before
PP completed the sweep handing Oxy an 8-1 loss in the series
finale.
On Friday Occidental managed to collect just four hits while
Pomona-Pitzer connected for 19 hits, scoring 18 runs. First baseman
Drew Hedman produced more offense than the entire Oxy team as he
hit for the cycle, driving in five, scoring three runs as he was
4-for-5 at the plate. Overall this weekend he was 7-for-11 with
three homeruns and eight RBIs.
PP opened up a 6-0 lead before Oxy got on the board in the
fourth when Kieran Doherty singled and scored. The
Sagehens responded with six runs in both the fifth and sixth
innings. The Tigers tacked on three more in the Nick
Saraceni singled to lead off the eighth inning and scored
when Doherty walked with the bases loaded. Casey
Harms was hit by a pitch, scoring another run and then
Richie Veihl lifted a sac fly to left, scoring the
final run of the game for the Tigers.
Saturday in game one PP again got out to an early lead again
thanks to Hedman who homered in his first at-bat. Trailing 4-0 in
the third Oxy plated a pair of runs, cutting the deficit to two
with a two-out rally. Anthony Salsedo,
Jason Jebbia (double) and Kevin Ozaki
connected for three consective hits. In the fourth inning Oxy
closed the gap even more, when Dale Garrett
doubled and scored on Veihl's single to center, pulling the
score to 4-3.
That was as close as the Tigers would get though. In the bottom
of the frame the Sagehens promptly added three more runs on
back-to-back doubles, a walk and another double. A solo homerun
gave PP another run in the fifth and they scored again in the
eighth. Doherty singled and Garrett lifted a sac fly to right for
the final Oxy run of the game.
In the final game of the series Occidental struck first when
Salsedo led off the game with a single and Doherty scored him on a
single to center. But that was all the offense the Tigers would
muster in the game as Pomona-Pitzer scored at least one run in five
different innings and cruised to an 8-1 victory.
Ross Pomerantz, Matthew Jones and Noel
Banuelos were all tagged with the losses.
Salsedo collected four hits and stole a base and Doherty
finished the weekend with three hits and two RBIs. Vehil drove in
three. Garrett and Jebbia were responsible for the only two
extra-base hits of the series.
Occidental falls to 8-7, 0-6 SCIAC entering a non-conference
stretch of games beginning next Tuesday. The Tigers will be on the
road against Vanguard University, but will then return home for a
seven-game home stand beginning on Monday, March 9 at 11:00 a.m.
against Bridgewater College (VA).
