LOS ANGELES, Calif. (March 22, 2009) – Chapman's
two-time All-American Wayde Kitchens got the most of the Occidental
College Tigers today on Anderson field as the home team fell 24-8
to the No. 11 ranked Panthers.
A shaky first inning put the Tigers back 7-0 from the start, a
hole they could not claw their way out of. The black and orange
trailed 10-0 in the fourth before the Tigers managed to score their
first run of the game. Jason Jebbia drew a walk to
lead things off and was driven in by Steve
Schaffer after stealing second and advancing to third on
an infield out.
After Chapman scored 10 more runs in the seventh and eighth
innings, combined, Occidental sent 10 men to the plate in the
eighth, scoring five additional runs. Again Jebbia scored, after
doubling in a pair down the leftfield line. Dale
Garrett drew a bases-loaded walk and scored on a sac fly
by pinch hitter Gonzalo Villasmil, who also lifted
a sac fly in the ninth. Nick Smallman and
Ryan Falck also scored after pinch-hit walks.
In the ninth Richie Veihl doubled and scored,
after singling and scoring in the eighth. Veihl, Garrett and Jebbia
connected for three consecutive two-baggers as Oxy tacked on
another pair of runs.
Occidental (10-12) used seven different pitchers in the contest,
Brooks Belter taking the loss, after surrendering
seven first inning runs, although they were all unearned.
Jebbia finished the day 3-for-5 and Garrett was 1-for-1 as each
player drove in two and scored twice.
The Tigers will get back into Southern California
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action this Friday when they
host the No. 19 California Lutheran University Kingsmen (17-5) at
3:00 p.m. on Anderson Field.
