ANTHEM, Ariz. (Feb. 12, 2010) – One day after dropping a
15-4 decision to Pacific Lutheran University (WA) at the four-day
Arizona Desert Classic, Occidental College needed extra innings
against the George Fox University Bruins to decide a winner.
Unfortunately for Oxy, GFU scored five runs with two outs in the
top of the 11th, turning the Tigers away with a tough
7-2 loss at Boulder Creek High School.
Occidental freshman starter Cory Popham tossed
6.1 innings, allowing just one earned run but the Tigers mustered
just three hits and one run off No. 19 George Fox sophomore Jeremy
Cheney.
Trailing 2-1 in the ninth inning, sophomore Anthony
Salsedo successfully executed a squeeze bunt on a 2-2
count to push Jason Jebbia across the plate to
knot the teams at 2-2, sending the game into extras.
While Oxy, the designated home team, was held scoreless over the
next two innings the Bruins got to the Tigers pitchers, scoring
five runs. A lead-off hit batter was followed by a walk before
back-to-back hits and an outfield error, to give GFU a 7-2 lead
that the Tigers were unable to match in the final frame.
Thursday afternoon Oxy and PLU took the field where the Lutes
out-hit the Tigers 17-8. Freshman Malachi Krishok
led the offensive attack for the Black and Orange with two hits
while recording nine putouts at first base. Stephen
Hilliard drew the only walk of the afternoon for Oxy and
scored a run while he was responsible for five assists at third
base.
On the hill, the trio of Nick Smallman, Ross
Pomerantz and Kevin Ozaki did not allow a
run in a combined 2.0 innings.
Tomorrow, Occidental (2-3) will take the field against Whitman
College at 2:00 p.m.
