ANTHEM, Ariz. (Feb. 13, 2010) – Occidental jumped out to
an early lead and continued to add runs over the final five innings
as they held Whitman College to a few as the Tigers earned their
third win of the season, and first of the Arizona Desert Classic,
with a 15-3 victory this afternoon.
Freshman Stephen Hilliard took the hill and
scattered six hits over 7.0 innings of work, allowing three earned
runs while striking out five as he earned his first collegiate win.
He was a dual-threat today, helping his own cause by scoring a pair
of runs for the Black and Orange.
The Tigers got off to a first inning 2-0 lead as the designated
visiting team and pushed that lead to 4-0 in the top of the fifth,
sparking a stretch of five innings in which the team scored.
Whitman pushed a pair of runs across the plate in the bottom of
the fifth before tacking on their final run of the game in the
sixth.
Leading 10-3 entering the top of the ninth,
Oxy scored five insurance runs on three hits.
Occidental shortstop Jason Jebbia showed his
offensive skills this afternoon, going 3-for-5, a double away from
the cycle, with four RBIs and two runs while adding a stolen base.
Freshman Pedro Aldape also collected three hits,
including a double with a pair of RBIs while junior catcher
Dale Garrett connected for a pair of hits and a
sacrifice fly. Garrett, Glenn Gray and
Tyler Eyrich also each scored twice for the
Tigers.
Sunday, Occidental (3-3) wraps up their Arizona trip with the
final game of the weekend against Linfield College at 10:00 a.m.
