CLAREMONT, Calif. (March 26, 2010) – Today in Southern
California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on the road,
the Occidental College Tigers collected just four hits and were
shut out for the first time this spring. Pomona-Pitzer put up seven
unanswered runs in the opening game of a three-game weekend series
between the squads.
Senior left fielder Glenn Gray led off the
fourth inning with a single and moved up to second on a sacrifice
by freshman first baseman Pedro
Aldape. Gray was the only Tiger to
advance beyond first base in the game.
Daniel Kelley was responsible for two of the
four hits, singling to right and center field in his second and
third at-bats, respectively. Stephen Hilliard,
Oxy's third baseman, got the first hit of the game in the
second inning. The only other batter to reach base was pitcher
Tyler Eyrich. He walked in the
seventh, but was thrown out, by the Sagehens' left fielder
Erik Munzer, in an inning-ending double play.
Eyrich got his third start of the season today and worked 6.0
innings before being tagged with the loss. The southpaw surrendered
a pair of homeruns, to James Kang and Nick Frederick, and 13 total
hits, of which seven were extra base hits. Travis Rooke-Ley was
3-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs as he connected for a trio of
doubles for PP.
Brooks Belter and Jacob
Blodgett each tossed an inning. Blodgett put up zeros,
retiring the side in order in the eighth with a pair of ground
balls to first base and a fly ball to right.
Occidental (7-16, 4-9 SCIAC) looks to snap a 10-game skid
tomorrow when they host Pomona-Pitzer (18-5, 12-1) for a twin bill
beginning at 11:00 a.m. on Anderson Field.
